Satellite phones are similar to telephone devices in looks, but, unlike land-line or cell phones they send radio signals to a satellite and then down to an earth station
where the call is directed to the appropriate Public Switched Telephone Network (land-line) or cellular network.
Iridium is one of the major telecommunication satellite constellations with 66 satellites that orbit the earth.
Outback Australia is a prime location for satellite phone usage as normal 'wired' telephones or cellular coverage is generally not available.
Satellite phones are the only single phone that works everywhere, however, they do not work indoors. They need a clear view of the satellite and can be affected by
poor weather.
An advantage of Iridium phones is the use of a non-directional antenna, meaning it does not have to be pointed in a particular direction.
